Growing Plants. Growing Men.
At Breaking Free Nursery, we don’t simply cultivate plants—we cultivate people.
The nursery is one of the classrooms God uses to transform the lives of men overcoming addiction. Every day in the nursery provides an opportunity to develop the same qualities that are necessary for spiritual growth: patience, faithfulness, perseverance, responsibility, humility, and hope.
Throughout Scripture, God uses farming and planting to teach profound spiritual truths. Jesus taught in parables about seeds, soil, harvests, vineyards, and fruit because the process of growing a healthy plant mirrors the process of growing a healthy disciple.
A seed must first be planted in good soil. It must develop deep roots before anyone sees growth above the surface. It requires water, sunlight, pruning, protection from weeds, and time. In the same way, God plants His Word in the hearts of men. He establishes deep roots before lasting change becomes visible. Through biblical discipleship, honest work, accountability, and the power of the Holy Spirit, lives begin to flourish.
As the Apostle Paul wrote:
“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”
—1 Corinthians 3:6
No one can force growth. We can prepare the soil. We can water faithfully. We can remove the weeds. But only God gives life.
Working in the nursery teaches that every worthwhile harvest requires consistency. There are no shortcuts. Plants grow one day at a time, and so do people. Character is developed through daily obedience. Integrity is built through faithful work. Freedom is strengthened by perseverance. Just as a gardener cannot abandon a crop and expect a harvest, we cannot neglect our walk with Christ and expect spiritual maturity.
“The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.”
—2 Timothy 2:6
The work itself becomes part of the discipleship process. Men learn to arrive on time, work diligently, serve others, care for what has been entrusted to them, and finish what they begin. These habits are not simply job skills—they are marks of Christian character that prepare men to become faithful husbands, fathers, employees, and servants of Christ.
Our prayer is that every man who walks through our nursery leaves with more than the ability to grow healthy plants. We pray he leaves with deep roots in Christ, a transformed heart, a renewed mind, and a life that bears fruit for the Kingdom of God.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
—Galatians 6:9
This is why we say:
We grow plants to grow men.
Because when God changes the heart, He changes the life. And a life firmly rooted in Christ will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.
